Warning? Don’t you mean Warming?
Homeostasis is the ability of an organism to effect compensatory change. Our Earth clearly exercises its ability to change geography, species, the polar centers, and so on. Climate change is just another part of this natural compensating mechanism – if things get too hot, just bring on an ice age to balance it all out.
“Warming” is therefore a precursor to a far more difficult set of problems: the sudden change into extremely cold and dry conditions. “Warning” is therefore the appropriate term...
Scientists predicted more than forty years ago that the end of a long period of relatively stable climate would occur during the twenty first century. However, they greatly underestimated the possibility for the simultaneous interaction of natural factors and those caused directly by human activities. There appear to be no compensating errors that might prevent the most dramatic climate shift in at least a hundred thousand years...
What then? What would survival in such a world be like? Is it possible that the magnitude of these two forces co-acting would completely alter the Earth from then on? Imagine little cities built under the ice, with wind and solar energy being harvested for every purpose from above the ice caps. Sounds like a recipe for a very small carrying capacity.
Such a world would have to rely heavily on direct human power.
Ironically, relying on direct human power today is one of the best strategies for dealing with -- and preparing for -- dramatic climate change.
Clearly, rapid and radical education offers the best chance to change this situation.
Wise preparation for the very probable future reality is absolutely critical to the survival of civilization.
